Thats the lot for this year
Just made my 2,100 cals per day target for this week and with the holiday season almost upon us I'm putting weight loss plans on hold while the new year.
For the record here are my daily totals -
Monday - 2167cals
Tuesday - 2050cals
Wednesday - 2268cals
Thursday - 1992cals
Friday - 2135cals
Saturday - 2046cals
Sunday - 2031cals
Daily Average - 2098cals.
Did weigh myself at 195lbs this morning so its basically a 8lb loss over the 7 weeks of this weekly calorie cutting challenge. I'm sure I'll put a few pounds back during the festive period but plan to jump straight back into action in 2013.
Need to push on in January and have considered keeping the 2100 calorie target but am so determined have decided to drop that another 100 cals to 2,000per day (at least for a month or so). Have highlighted areas i believe i can cut back so why not.

Well it is nearly Christmas
Got to report I just failed to reach my calorie target this week, I averaged 2156cals when aiming for 2150 (ok only 6 cals per day above my target). Still I'll be dropping my target to 2100cals per day this week.
For the record here are my daily totals -
Monday - 2118cals
Tuesday - 2140cals
Wednesday - 2083cals
Thursday - 2249cals
Friday - 2461cals
Saturday - 1935cals
Sunday - 2106cals
Average - 2156cals.
As you can see I was actually below target on 5 of the days and I can explain the others, basically my worst day Friday was because I was at a Christmas dinner and of course I consummed too much. Maybe as it was a one off shouldn't count that day, suppose its wrong time of year for the diet to be too strict.
Thursday afternoon went for a drink with a good friend in York, just catching up and a good chat, something we do occasionally.
Was playing British League table tennis at weekend and it was a unbelievable, we started the weekend 2nd bottom of the table and thinking about how we could avoid relegation. Never known anything like it, 3 wins and a draw was a fantastic achievement for us but it got better and better as other results turned the table on its head and we finished top of the table. Its amazing with just one point separating the top 5 teams.
Two more weekends (6 matches to go), we are now thinking about winning it, considering our squads individual rankings think unbelievable is the right word.

Day Off
Actually had a day off from my weight loss plan this week, Saturday a few of us from my Pool team took out our ex landlord who as retired from running the pub. Was good fun but with a bit of beer flowing, out for a meal, etc it was silly to do my calorie counting.
So the other 6 days I was on my plan and over them days I averaged 2189 cals per day which of course was below the 2200cal target.
For the record here are my daily totals -
Monday - 2208cals
Tuesday - 2189cals
Wednesday - 2243cals
Thursday - 2162cals
Friday - 2166cals
Saturday - day off
Sunday - 2165cals
Average - 2189cals (6 days).
So for this week I drop my target to 2150cals, could be tough because a look at last week shows i didn't have a single day below that level so going to have to work at it, still confident though.

Couldn't Resist
My current experiment of counting calories and reducing my intake each week without actually weighing as been going well.
However a month without jumping on the scales finally got to my resistance so i took a peep this morning. Well I'm happy to say that I'm down to 196lb, was 203lb at start of this challenge so got to be happy with the 7lb loss. Another 4 weeks to Chrimmy so hopfully I should lose more.
On another note I've got someone coming tomoz to test my windows and see if the double glazing is energy efficient. Apparently you can get government subsidies to change any that are not efficient. I've got two large windows/doors leading to the patio that are quite old so suspect i lose a lot of heat there.
Will have to do a few calculations to see how much i'll save off my heating bill against what it'll cost to replace. Maybe it'll save me a bit of money, I usually work on a 5 year pay back.

Bang on
Well cant get any closer with my calorie counting, unbelievably my daily average this week is bang on my target of 2250 calories per day.
Must admit I'm getting tempted to jump on the scales to see if I've lost any weight but so far have beaten my urges.
It going to be tough this week as my target daily average now drops to 2200, but think i know where improvements can be made and fully expect to make my target.
For the record here are my daily totals -
Monday - 2316cals
Tuesday - 2187cals
Wednesday - 2279cals
Thursday - 2129cals
Friday - 2241cals
Saturday - 2270cals
Sunday - 2328cals
Average - 2250cals.
Bit fed up with the weather, the rain is keeping me indoors (and limiting my exercise) but hopfully it'll soon improve.
Did go over on my ankle last thursday during a table tennis match, it was my first game of the night but i managed to complete it and play my other two singles and doubles. Hurt quite a bit afterwards when i coolled down but don't think i've done any serious damage. Next match is wednesday so its getting a rest and i hope should be ok.

Just did it
Just managed to get inside my target of having a daily average of under 2,300 calories this week (my average was 2,288). What I also did this week was increase the amount of physical exercise and must admit I felt hungry at times but managed to stay on track.
For the record here are my daily totals -
Monday - 2386cals
Tuesday - 2261cals
Wednesday - 2329cals
Thursday - 2163cals
Friday - 2195cals
Saturday - 2189cals
Sunday - 2495cals
Average - 2288cals.
As you can see Sunday is the highest day but can be explained by the fact I was playing in a TT competition so packed up sandwichs and things that would add up higher than my normal lunch.
So the target now drops to 2,250 cals per day average for this week and I'm not going to pretend it'll be easy as I'm going to have to think much harder what i can eat, although next Monday I hope to report another succesfull week.
Hows my weight going ? I don't know as have not yet been tempted to jump on the scales since I started this experiment. What I can say is I believe I've lost a little just by the way I feel in my clothes.

Calorie Counting
As those who read my blog will know the latest weight loss challenge is based on calorie counting. Each week upto christmas I'm aiming to reduce my average daily intake by 50cals, two weeks ago target was 2,400cals so simple deduction my target last week was 2,350cals.
I've actually developed my own spreadsheet which calculates this from the food and drink that goes into my mouth, its ever developing if i add new foods to my diet. And last week I can happily report I was well in target with a daily average of 2278cals. In fact if I do the same this week it will be within this weeks target of 2,300cals so should be easy in theory.
For the record here are my daily totals -
Monday - 2051cals
Tuesday - 2064cals
Wednesday - 2355cals
Thursday - 2461cals
Friday - 2311cals
Saturday - 2278cals
Sunday - 2426cals
Average - 2278cals.
Looking at a calorie calculator website for my height and current weight I need 2,561cals per day to maintain my current weight but thats without exercise, 30 mins hard exercise per day I can add around 300 cals to that number (60mins, 600cals).
Anyway it doesn't take brain surgery to work out that if I eat lower than that number even without exercise (i intend to exercise) I will lose weight. Apparently to lose 1lb per week you need to eat 500cals under the maintain weight figure.
My aim is to find a calorie level I'm comfortable with up to christmas then take that into the new year, maintain a good exercise level and hopfully the weight will keep coming off.
Hope all that makes sense.

Aches and Pains this week
Played TT match last night and it was tough, not against a top team but they were decent players and I was suffering. Really pleased i managed to win all 3 of my games because before i started i ached all over, all my muscles hurt. Really was mental stength and hatred of losing that pulled me through, my body was on its limit, i really did hurt.
Its obviously the result of a lot of hard matches over the weekend taking there toll (plus played tuesday but that not really same standard so wasn't pushed hard). Think I'm getting older, should recover quicker, need to get fitter.
Been in garden this morning picking leaves off my lawn, be glad when they stop falling but not so many now. Got to do it or they end up in the guttering or blocking the drains.
Nothing planned yet for this weekend, so maybe a quiet one, weather permitting I've a bit of outside painting i want to do along with a few other jobs.
Nothing new to report on the dating front, think the one i mentioned that i had 2nd date with as gone a bit cool so not pushing it, will see what happens, to be honest not at all bothered. Did have some first dates before my hol, but none were my type, not sure what i'm looking for at present, think i'm enjoying been single.
Saying that would be nice to go out for a meal sometime, one night or even sunday lunch, so maybe should make a effort to find someone to go with (have been chatting online).
Been looking at few holidays and trying to decide where to go next year, wont be booking anything until after I've been away at chrimmy though as i've to get a new passport as mine is out of date early next year.

Last Week
Up to Friday the eating was on target, was maintaining a average of less than 2,400 calories per day but think with been away i blew it somewhat over the weekend.
Still back on course today and hope to achieve my target of 2,350 per day average this week, very confident I'll do it.
The weekend went well, we didn't have a strong team out and i really thought we would be stuck at the bottom of the division. However we got stuck in and are 3rd bottom, out of the relegation zone which really is a good achievement looking at the other teams rankings. I managed to win 5 of my 10 matches which was pleasing but can be better because 3 of my losses were in deciding 5th sets.
Did manage to upset one of my opponents enough for him to call me a choice name, some people are just bad losers, lol.
Just played Pool tonight was 1st round of the town championships and managed to win 2-0 so happy with that.
Had a date last week, was actually a 2nd date with this person, was nice but still not sure we are compatable or its what i'm after. Usually make my mind up early but am unsure, still will probably be having a 3rd date within the next week.

Quick Positive Post
1. Away for weekend playing TT, gonna have a laugh, prob lose though.
2. My Pool team is top of the league, ok only a third of way through season but best start we've had.
3. Leeds Utd are in the last 8 of the League Cup, two premier scalps already and now European champions Chelsea are coming to ER, gonna be a one of them nights, reckon the atmosphere will be electric. The rivalry goes to hatred on and off the pitch going back nearly 50 years, ok we shouldn't win but who knows, maybe them cockneys posers will freeze on a wet, cold Yorkshire night.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chelsea_F.C._and_Leeds_United_A.F.C._rivalry
4. Next year a long time online friend is planning to visit, its a ex blogger that i keep in touch with on a weekly basis, although we never met we just know we'll get on and she gonna come and stay. Ok maybe later next year but I'm excited about it, she coming a long way.
5. The sun is shining.

Car Crash
Apparently I had a Car crash on september 11th according to my insurance company when they phoned yesterday.
But as you can guess this is news to me but someone as approached my insurance company saying i crashed into them, strange there are no marks (that wern't there before) on my car.
Thats as much as I know so far, I've done a bit of research to try remember where i went that day, sometimes go to supermarket but have checked my credit card statement (always use my card) and there are no transactions that day.
So thought maybe it was on the night but checking football fixtures that was the night England drew with Ukraine and I watched that at home.
So the odds are I wasn't even out in my car that day, until they tell me where this incident happend I think its just a load of poppycock, maybe its a scam or maybe someone got the wrong car number but as far as I'm concerned it definately wasn't me.

Back Home to weight loss plans and dating
Well I'm back from holiday and must admit with all the travelling and living out of a suitcase it was very tiring. Still doing Route 66 as been a ambition for a long time and i saw some interesting places and met some crazy people.
Hopfully get some photos downloaded soon.
Did weigh in on my return and the scales showed 203lb so a increase of 12lb although hopfully getting back to normal meals and not partying every night will soon get me back on track.
So starting next week (Monday) for 8 weeks i plan to calorie count and reduce my average each week upto Christmas.
Next week I'll be aiming for a average of 2,400 cals per day, then each week that total will drop by 50cals (eg week 2 daily average 2,350, week 3 2,300, etc.).
Apparently to maintain my weight i need 2,500cals per day for a average lifestyle but i also aim to increase how much exercise i do so will see where the plan takes me.
So at this stage no weight targets will just see what happens.
A little early so not counting my chickens but i had some first dates (from a online site) before my hol, just meal or coffee meet ups. Some went well and one in particular i got on really well with and she feels the same so we are hopfully doing a 2nd date next week, will see what happens but at this stage keeping my options open.

Weight Loss Wednesday - Failure
Bit of a failure today, weighed in at same as last week 191lb which was a little dissapointing because I've failed to reach my target by a lousy 2lb. Actually thought I would do it, thought I'd eaten ok but it was not to be.
So its a break from weigh ins for 3 weeks, see where I am then start my next challenge.
On a positive note went to a wedding reception last week, getting dressed to go and put my trousers on to find I wasn't happy in them, they were too baggy so changed into a different pair. Despite having to buy a new pair I'm happy because always believe how clothes fit is a far better guide to weight loss than just looking at the scales, definately gives you a boost.

Living in the real world
Been giving a lot of thought to the fact many of us spend a good part of our lives living in a virtual world nowadays. Everything thing revolves around the internet, and with recent bad weather and my knee problems of the last year I'm becoming as guilty as most.
Ok I've not succombed to an iphone or ipad, i don't take my laptop out with me, in fact the only time i go on the net is when at home.
However I will admit to spending a lot of time online many times just for the sake, I've a lot of online friends like many of us do, which its nice to exchange iews with. I've been lucky enough to meet some so they have become real.
Don't get me wrong the internet is fantastic but is it really a replacement for the real world, of course it isn't.
Anyway I've made a decision that I'm going to limit my time online and get out and do more. Suppose I'm lucky I've got a decent garden I can spend time in, I can go for walks, I'm involved with sport, its really just about motivation to do these things.
Yes I will still keep blogging, as I said I'll come online to do what I want to, just cut down on the meaningless hours trawling various sites just for the sake.
While I'm here I'll just report that my average daily calories consumed last week was 2314 which is 52 per day less than the previous week. At the moment its experimental and my weight loss action plan will start at end of October. May actually maintain a similar calorie intake (maybe cut slightly) but undertake a increaed amount of physical activity, certainly less time on the computor will help that plan.
I'm been positive about the physical stuff because I feel my joint issues (mainly knee) are almost fully recovered, actually feeling quite good and strong. Hope I arn't tempting fate but best they have been for a very long time, even stopped taking pain killers and anti-inflammetrys.
Got to go now, don't want to be on here too long.

Weight Loss Wednesday - Calorie Counting
First and foremost I'm another 2lbs down this week so now at 191lb, another two next week and I'll be at my target weight so pleased with the progress.
Did a calorie counting experiment last week (monday to sunday), logging everything each day onto a spreadsheet i've set up. It than calculates my daily calories each day and a weekly average.
Last week my average was 2366 calories per day, highest day was tuesday when i consumed 2667 calories but that is explained by the fact it was the night went out for a few beers. Lowest day was friday when i consumed 2220.
Looking on a website normal calories per day for someone my age and size is around 2500 while should be aiming at 2,000 to lose a pound per week. These figures are for someone with a light activity level but last week I did a lot of physical activity with some heavy gardening and a table tennis competition at the weekend, plus a league match and training session during the week.
Anyway my initial weekly average is 2366 as I've said and my aim is to slowly bring this down each week which should in turn help my weight drop along with increased physical activity. This is the plan I'm starting after my holiday, instead of the onus been on weighing I'm going to concentrate on getting my calorie intake down to 2,000 by christmas. I will weigh on my return from holiday but not again until christmas and see where calorie counting takes me.
Thats the plan folks, but still got to weigh in next week hopfully to see I've reached my 189lb goal.

Weigh in Wednesday - Ex Girlfriends & holidays
We'll start with the weight loss and I'm pleased to report a 3lb loss this week which now brings me to 193lb, pleased about that because I'm still on target for 189lb before i go on my American trip (2 weeks to go).
I know on this holiday I'll possibly gain a significant amount and am already planning my weight loss campaign for when I get back. A few years ago (2007) I did a stringent calorie counting system which did me good, at that time I came down a lot and eventually got down to coincidently exactly where I am now 193lb. Couldn't believe that but have checked my old records, obviously a lot as happend since then and i've had bad times wheresome of the weight as gone back on.
I designed a spread sheet that I fill in on a daily basis everything i eat and drink and it calculates my daily calories (each day and average), i'll be aiming for under 2,000 per day which should bring the weight off slowly.
Yesterday was ex girlfriend day, first of all sadly it would have been Janes 49th birthday so she was definately in my thoughts. Phoned her Mum in the morning and had a good chat which was nice, think they are always pleased to hear from me. I'm actually going to visit them (take to lunch) the day before I fly to America as I'm staying over at a airport hotel so will take the opportunity to visit Janes grave again.
And last night actually went out for a drink and chat with Paula which was nice. I know we split awhile ago but it was more to do with circumstance and lifestyles, we never fell out and always remained good friends. Before anyone asks we are not planning to get back together, we've both moved on its just friends going out for a drink. Whether we do it again, well don't see why not if we both fancy a drink, we had a good laugh last night.
As for holidays I've taken the plunge about Christmas, think been home alone would have depressed me so booked a singles holiday to the Costa Brava, in fact its 12 nights so Christmas and New Year will be partying in sunny Barcelona.
Bit overspending this year with holidays and home improvements but was helped with the christmas decision with a nice tax rebate, apparently they calculated my tax wrong in 2008 and I got a nice little sum that paid for half my holiday.

Weigh in Wednesday - Slow going
Another week another pound, thats all folks just a solitary pound lost so down to 196lb this morning and my target of 189lb before my Route 66 trip is looking a bit of a distance away, 7lb in 3 weeks is not going to be easy, think this is a big week.
Think the damage was done saturday with the lads trip to the races, took my finger off the pulse as the beer flowed and the food intake wasn't too calorie friendly, still life is for living and i lost a pound.
It was a good day out, had a real good laugh but sadly I didn't back any winners so it was my wallet that came back lighter.
Can't make my mind up whether to go away at Christmas again but need to decide soon. Its not a great time to be at home alone and to be honest think I would get emotional if by myself. Think the events of the last few years still effect me, i've changed a lot and have a lot of ups and downs, find the downs are when i'm on my own.
I've got a large distant family (cousins, etc) but very few really keep in touch especially since my parents died, there are just 2 or 3 I talk to ut they got their own families. Same with friends Christmas is a family time so can't expect to see much of them either.
Need to make my mind up soon, the "singles" hols are selling real quick.

Did Obama do good for America
Almost 4 years ago (nov 2008) I posted an Obama quiz asking how people thought he would do in is term in office. With the money blowing circus that is the American Elections arriving in our news programmes how do you think he did.
From day one I always had suspicians his "change" was a load of old bull an he was another Tony Blair, good talker but nothing else.
But got to give the bloke a chance and now we can look at the facts.
These are the questions I asked in 2008 (with my answers from the time) -
1. What Tax levels will the Americans be paying compared to today ?
a) More
b) Less
c) About the same
2. What will Employment levels be ?
a) More Unemployed
b) Less Unemployed
c) About the Same
3. Value of the £ against the $ (currently £1 = $1.63)
a) More $ to £
b) Less $ to £
c) About the Same
4. Law & Order
a) Higher Crime Rate
b) Lower Crime Rate
5. Troops out of Iraq ?
a) In 18 months as promised
b) During is term of office
c) Still there
6. Troops out of Afganistan
a) All Out
b) Reduction in numbers
c) Increase in numbers
d) Same amount there
7. Environment
a) 80% cut in emmisions as promised
b) significant reduction in emmisions
c) Slight reduction in emmisions
d) No reductions in emmisions
8. Health Service
a) No Change
b) Free Health Service for the Poor
c) Free Health Service for all
d) Significantly Cheaper Health Service
e) Slightly Cheaper Health Service
9. Stock Markets (Dow Jones) currently approx 9,600
a) Higher
b)Lower
c) Same
10. Who'll win the next Election ?
a) Democrats
b) Republicans
c) Dunno
My answers
1. a)Higher Taxes - Hate to say it but told you so- with more tax rises promised in 2013 (his speech in washington 11th july 2011 stated this.
2. c) Similar levels unemployed - Actually 86,000 Americans now don't have a job than when he took office.
3. a) More Dollars to £ (think its actually about 15cents lower than it should be and will level out) - I called this wrong its about the same today, so no change.
4. a) Higher Crime Rate, think more poverty will cause that as population increases. - Can only find data for his first two years in office and it dropped both years so credit where credit is due.
5. b) Think they'll be out at some stage but 18 months is too ambitious. - Got there eventually, give him a job achieved badge.
6. d) Can't see the situation changing for both the US or UK could even be an increase. - No change actually think more troops, think this is Obamas Vietnam.
7. b) Significant decrease although 80% not attainable - All talk no action from the worlds biggest gas guzzlers.
8. e) Think he'll make efforts but find its a bottomless pit. - Talk is cheap, no real improvement in health care, love to hear any Americans opinions on this one.
9. a) Higher, think history suggests it will grow again - As predicted its gone up as all stock markets around the world have, as i said history is the big indicator, so the rich just got richer during the last 4 years.
10. c) Dunno - Depends whether the "Change" is good or bad for the Americans & it can go either way I'm sure. - Over to the American people on this one.

Weigh in Wednesday - Need a good week
Only a solitary 1lb lost this week so a touch dissapointed as i would have liked a bit more as I'm still above my pre-Austria weight (by 1lb). So currently I weigh in at 197lb and still have 8lb to go before my America trip, only 4 more weigh ins to go. Suppose that makes it an easy formula, 2lb per week.
Think the main reason that i didn't lose what I hoped was been away playing TT involved 2 nights in an hotel and eating out (wrong foods) plus a few drinks. Still back eating my usual stuff now so will see what happens.
Am actually off for a day out Saturday with some of the lads from the local pub, we're off to the Horse Racing at Thirsk so don't think that will be a healthy eating/drinking day. Still got to enjoy life, we only get one chance.

Looking Forward
Have been away in Sunderland all weekend playing a TT tournament and must admit I was apprehensive, really didn't think my knee would stand up to two days hard competition. In fact with all the problems I've had in the last year I really thought my days of playing at this level were coming to an end.
Well I'm delighted to say I feel great my knee feels best its been for a long time, yes a bit stiff and swollen but no real pain. I know I wasn't at my sharpest have hardly practised and you can't get away with that at national tournament level.
On saturday i failed to qualify for the over 50's so went into the plate competition but did get through my section to the main draw in the over 40's.
As really expected went out early doors Sunday in the over 40's but found my form in the 50's plate going all the way and taking the title, was very pleased I must admit.
So now I can look forward to the new season with more optimism.

Rocky & Me
As all time sporting heroes go I have a few and one of them was Rocky Marciano, lets face it Boxng is the toughest of sports and to date this is the bloke who is the only ever undefeated heavyweight. Yes 49 fights 49 wins probably never be beaten but its not just about the statistics his fights were always exciting sometimes brutal.
Today is the 43rd anniversary of his death in a plane crash, but the legend lives on, RIP Rocky.

Weigh in Wednesday - not as good as i thought
Jumped on the scales this morning expecting a 4lb loss (or more) to take me back to where i was pre-Austria. Thought I'd ate well and felt like I was there but the truth is I only lost 2lb so down to 198lb.
As my 6 week challenge is to get to 189lb I've still got to lose 9lb in the next 5 weeks, not going to be easy and need to stay focussed i think.
Table Tennis Season starts for real this weekend, I'm playing in the Northern Masters at Sunderland, going to be tough I think with lack of proper practice through the summer with my knee problems. Just hope everything goes ok and i don't aggravate anything.
As for Austria I've now got my photos downloaded if you are interested :-
http://www.flickr.com/photos/8308363@N02/sets/72157631271916868/detail/
Did have a couple of incidents on the trip, first managed to set the hotel fire alarm off, they didn't have irons in the room so i hung my shirts in the shower to straighten the creases with the steam. When i opened the bedroom door the steam went straight for the smoke detector.
Other incident was when a few of us had a late night at the village pub, was walking back to the hotel when all of a sudden all the street lights went off, apparently they do at 1am. We were all of a sudden in pitch black, couldn't see end of your nose and I managed to trip over a kerb grazing my elbow in the process.

Music Monday - Is it really 22 years
It was August 27th 1990 when the world was robbed of its greatest ever guitarist when Stevie Ray Vaughan was killed in a helicopter crash.
So here is a 15 minute taster and tribute.
And here is a full concert (Montreaux 1985), will be hooking my PC to the TV and watching later.
RIP Stevie

Weigh in Wednesday - Damage Limitation
Back from my week in Austria and today I jumped on the scales to reveal a increase of 4lb which I'm quite happy about as history suggests I'm capable of putting on much more while on holiday.
So my current weight is 200lb (or 14st 4lb) and I've 6 weigh ins before my next adventure so I'm setting myself a target of reaching 13st 7lb (180lb) before I fly.
Thats a loss of 11lb in 6 weeks, I will do it.
As for the holiday the scenary was stunning, visited some amazing places, met a lot of nice people (and a few strange ones). Will post photos soon.
One strange thing on the last day visited St Wolfgang and went into the church which is stunning but once inside a strange feeling came over me and started thinking about Jane, it was like she was with me. Now I put it down to the fact it was coming up to the third anniversary of her death (day after my return home) so decided to light a candle which is not something i normally do.
Had to let the rest of our group walk on and just sat there for 10 minutes before catching them up, was quite emotional.
Anyway didn't think any more about it until after I got home. I phoned Janes Mum on the anniversary for a chat as I do to see how they all are and she asked about my holiday. Now the strange part is the first thing she asked was if I'd been to St Wolfgang and seen the church. Apparently Jane and her Mum had visited years ago (before I met her) and it was a place Jane loved.

Weigh in Wednesday - Not Quite
Well my last weigh in before Austria at the weekend and I really wanted to smash the 14stone (196lb) barrier but it was not to be as I weighed at 197lb just a solitary pound above.
Still it was down one pound in the week so still moving in the right direction and to be honest don't think I've really pushed it since making my origional target.
So next weigh in will be two weeks time, got to accept on holiday I'm likely to move the scales in the wrong direction but hope for minimal damage. I'll see where I am on my return then set my next target/challenge.
Really been enjoying the Olympics, as most who read this know I'm a big sports fan and its great getting to see some of the minor sports for a change. And well done the Great Britain team 22 golds already and 3rd in the medal table which is fantastic for a country our size.
And well done from them athletes from the Land of the White Rose who have helped GB, yes if Yorkshire was a country we would currently be 11th in the medal table, not bad for a population of only 5 million.

Stupid Boy
The exercises the physio as set me for my knee seem to be doing some good but a long way to go yet and I know I need to be patient.
However yesterday I decided to go to Halifax and play in the table tennis tournament I'd entered some months ago. My head was telling me i should scratch but I've been getting restless and thought would see how it goes. Basically just been a stupid boy, last thing my knee needs at present is twisting and turning.
Still I battled through my group but wasn't able to move enough to play my natural defensive game, won two lost two of my matches. It certainly aggravated my knee which was quite sore afterwards and common sense prevailed because I've pulled out of the knock out stages today.
The good news despite it giving me a lot of jip last night, feels no worse for wear this morning so its back to ice and the exercises the physio as set, need to start doing some walking, and stuff that doesn't involve twisting just to build strength.

Weigh in Wednesday -
As i reached my goal last week for me its not weight loss challenge now its just a weekly weigh in. Sure I rewarded myself with a couple of treats this week and haven't been quite as strict with myself but also not taken my foot off the ball either.
The good news is I've still managed to keep the downward trend going although just a solitary pound lost this week, so its now 198lb.
Next wednesday will be my last weigh in before I go to Austria and thinking it would be great if I could dip below 14stone (196lb), something I wouldn't have thought possible 10 weeks ago when I was at 222lb.

News Update
1. Fingers crossed but the exercises set by the physio seem to be having the desired affect on my knee, still a long way to go but perhaps I won't need to go under the knife.
2. Not sure what tomorrows weigh in will reveal but still hopfully a slight loss but must admit have allowed a couple of treats this week following achieving my target, we'll see.
3. Been to Dentist for my check up and sadly got to go back, have cracked a tooth which needs filling and another the enamel is chipped so that requires sorting before it gets worse. Nothing urgent so getting done 1st October.
4. Finished our Pool season with a 5-4 defeat last night (although won mine), had a team meeting afterwards and I've been elected team captain next season (should start in september).
5. Supposed to be laying a TT tournament at Halifax at the weekend but probaly wont go to give my knee more time, although if it keeps mproving am tempted to test it out (know I shouldn't).
6. Getting new conservatory/utility room built, old one was a bit iffy and some of the wood rotting, another big expense but should have everything ship shape after this job is complete.

Weight Loss Challenge - week 9 - Job Done
All I can say is I have a smile on my face this morning because I'm "home and dry" yes the 22lb loss target as been achieved and with 2 weeks to spare.
In fact its 23lb because I lost 3lb last week which is even more pleasing because I've broken the 200lb mark, this morning the scales showed 199lb.
Job Done but I wont be stopping here its my long term aim to get much lower.
Would like to say I'll never weigh at 200lb or above again but with a holiday coming up in just over 2 weeks I may blip a little. Still I've a couple of weeks to drop a little more before Austria and maybe give me a buffer if that makes sense. I'll be delighted if my first weigh in after the holiday says 199lb, it would be a great starting point for my next challenge.
Mick - start weight 222lb - todays weight - 199lb - target loss 22lb - loss this week 3lb (14%) - total loss 23lb ( 105%).
Reg - start weight 131lb - todays weight - ?lb - target loss 6lb - loss this week ?lb (0%) - total loss so far - ?lb(58%)
So how have I managed to succeed ?
Basically its been a significant change to what I eat/drink on a weekly basis.
Beer - have cut down a lot, go out less and on the occasions i do have diet soft drinks most of the time. Reckon beer intake is down 70 to 80% to what i did previously. Of course still enjoy a pint but don't feel the urge for a big session reckon down from 20 pints to between 4 and 6 per week.
Breakfasts not changed significantly for weight loss, always had weetabix with fruit (berries) but I've now given myself options depending how i feel, now its Weetabix or Porridge or Bran Flakes so I have a choice and keeps food from been boring, just go with which i fancy that day (still have the fruit obviously).
Bacon/sausage - Not so much sausage but i love bacon and could always make a meal with it or have a sarnie at lunch if peckish. Well now don't have any in the fridge, eliminated from my diet options.
Chocolate/biscuits - I often have a coffee during the day and sometimes it was hard to resist having a biscuit with it, solution easy don't have any in the house. I'll have a small handfull of grapes or cherries in the afternoon to stop me feeling hungry.
Snacks - As above I always had chocolate and biscuits in the house and to justify I used the old tale "its in case visitors come", of course too convenient and in real terms it would be me eating them when i felt hungry, and as any chocoholics will tell you once you start its tough stopping.
Now I have apples, oranges & bananas in as my only snacks as and when required.
Lunch - Always been not too bad at lunch this is my small meal but occasionally would eat the wrong stuff, now it varies between a weight watchers meal (there are a few I like) usually between 300 and 400 cals, a bowl of soup, or a sandwich (chicken, ham or low fat cheese). Again of the 3 options i just decide which i fancy on the day.
Main Meal - Always loved my food and enjoy my dinner, many times it would be far too many calories but now thats changed. I only have one main dinner per week (usually sunday), last week it was gammon, veg & jacket potato week before roast beef, roast pots, yorkshire pudding, etc.
So what about the other meals, well I make five salads up and have one per day until they run out, at least one will not have meat on it will use something like cottage cheese. In fact just made them up today cottage cheese, spam, chichen, tuna & ham are what i've made this week.
My 7th main meal is usually a meat free day, tend to have just a jacket potato with beans or cottage cheese.
Will admit occasionally (every 2 or 3 weeks) will have fish and chips, but these are done in oven not deep fried.
Bread- Always had wholemeal bread but things like salads, fish & chips i had 2 slices with i will now have one.
Supper - Late night hunger was always a problem for me when dieting and i would take unhealthy options all the time but now I get some Ryvita (slimming biscuits about 30cal) and have with some low fat cheese spread or cottage cheese.
Think thats about it, think varying the breakfast and lunch options on a daily basis depending on mood is allowing me to enjoy my food.

Scary Moment
Had been out gardening all morning, came in and half way through my meal started to sweat and felt quite ill, also got double vision.
Unfortunately my phone was in a different room and i was worried so decided to go get it and phone a neighbour, only got two paces and next thing i remember is finding myself in a heap on the floor.
Managed to get myself to my phone and J came around, i was sweating and gone white when he arrived and we phoned the emergency doctor.
Spoke to Doc on phone and after telling him symptoms he thinks I fainted (maybe got dehydrated)and told me to rest for remainder of day and if I get any more symptoms to phone again.
Must admit it really scared me, feels like i hit my wrist and jaw when i fell, nothing too bad though can just feel them.
Nothing like that has ever happened to me and it is worrying when you live alone I must admit.
Do feel fine now but its feet up and watch the golf on TV.

Attack of the flying ants
Got lucky last night for some reason i decided to have a walk in my garden at about 7.30pm and as i passed my french doors noticed hundreds of baby flying ants. Looks like they had laid their eggs under a ledge and just hatched.
Last year i had a invasion of them and they got in the loungs somehow, had right job clearing them out. Lukily this time I attacked first with ant powder both outside and under my carpet where i thought they got in before.
Now got hundreds of dead ants outside, looks like I won this one.

Big Jacks Little Black Book - Have we all got one ?
Was just reading an article on one of the football sites about one of my Leeds United heroes Jack Charlton and the controvesy he caused back in the early seventies when during a TV interview he announced he had a "Little Black Book" with two names in that given the chance he would get before he ended his career.
http://www.mightyleeds.co.uk/pdf/season197071part2.pdf
Big Jack wasn't just anybody, a gentleman but hard as nails, part of Englands 1966 world cup winning team who later wen on to be a very succefull manger, including period with the Irish National team which is arguably the best period in their history.
He was honest, outspoken, down to earth, with Jack you what you saw was what you got.
Whether the book actually existed and the two names in it is still a mystery today, did Jack get them, who knows ?
Anyway it got me thinking and I reckon I've got a little black book of my own, yes sure there are people we dont like but what I'm talking about is people we actually hate and would wish to see harm come to them.
Maybe there is someone in your past that treated you badly or maybe someone you consider disrespected a close friend, we can only know that answer from ourselves. Suppose its more about carrying a grudge which we all know we shouldn't but sometimes people in our lives cross the line.
Not that I'm going to hunt anyone down or anything but at same time it best we don't run into each other, certainly would find it hard not to say anything.
So anyone brave enough to admit to having a "little black book".
Actually saw one person on my list the other day but we were both in cars, in fact pulled up behind him at the railway gates, did think about getting out but comon sense prevailed, lol.

Weight Loss Challenge - Week 8
Knew I'd been good this week (diet and exercise) and am pleased to report another 3lb gone, thats now 20lb in 8 weeks and I'm now only 2lb short of my target with 3 weeks to go. Not that I'm taking my foot off the gas as I've said previously this is a lifestyle change and this is only my first target.
I've been looking at the bigger picture and giving a lot of thought and have got in my head that I eventually want to get under 12stone ((168lb), think last time I was at that weight I was at school, lol.
But I'm not silly and will do it in stages setting targets as I go, sort of stepping stones. Experience tells me that I'll put some weight back on when I go on holiday in August, well thats fine but I wont go stupid but will treat myself. The Wednesday after my return I'll check the damage and set a new target based on that, slowly I'll keep going down and down.
As yo-yo dieter in recent years the biggest thing to me is my new found motivation but not only that the ease at which I've significantly cut things from my diet and replaced them with more healthy options.
To be honest beer as always been a problem, I still have a pint but very rarely, in fact even when out I'm drinking low sugar soft drinks most of the time when I would have had a beer.
Of course its not just the drink Ive changed what I eat, think I've found a diet that works for me and am actually enjoying because its quite varied but does include quite a bit of fruit.
Mick - start weight 222lb - todays weight - 202lb - target loss 22lb - loss this week 3lb (14%) - total loss 20lb ( 91%).
Reg - start weight 131lb - todays weight - 127.5lb - target loss 6lb - loss this week 0lb (0%) - total loss so far - 3.5lblb (58%)
I trained at table tennis last week because I had a tournament saturday,it was a ranking event and i had to play a group of 7 (all play all) of similar standard. I was rated to finish 5th and admit i lost to one of the two players ranked below me but to counter that beat two above me including a win against the top ranked man who was 28 places above me in the national list. So pleased in the end but will own up to one more thing, did have a couple of chocolate bars while competing (for energy of course).
Spent most of Sunday in the garden, digging up a overgrown area (which was a good work out), feel I'm just about getting on top of things now, its looking good.
Did go for a practice Monday but was a little stiff and sore from the weekend so cut it short, am going to play a local club tournament tonight, not that hard but will get me moving.
As I was posting this I just had a phone call with more bad news, another of my cousins has passed away. It wasn't unexpected as he had been dignosed with brain cancer last week and they had told the family there was no hope.

Its up to me now
Was at the Docs earlier today to get the results from the various medical tests I've had recently and am very happy with the outcome.
Basically my heart is good and strong, my blood pressure is normal, my colesterol levels are low and no sign of developing diabetos.
In fact the only thing the tests revealed was what i know already that my Uric Acid level in my blood is too high which wasn't surprising because the reason i went to the Docs in the first place was a acute gout attack. It read 470 and really needs to be below 400.
Think with my diet (dare i say new lifestyle) i'm lowering it but its a lifelong challenge that I'm prepared to give my best shot. Thought I may have to go on a drug to lower it but after diecussing with the Doc he accepts that I should try do it by eating/drinking the right stuff and losing weight.
We have agreed to re-access my blood and weight in January (6 months) to see if I'm doing the Job and I'm determined, anyone who as had gout will understand why.
So basically its up to me now.
I've learn't a lot about gout by reading varies websites and am learning more all the time, its a very complicated subject and I'm taking on board more information all the time.

Weight Loss Challenge - Week 7
Not quite sure how I did it but am reporting a 3lb loss this week, wasn't really expecting it because i had a couple of treats during the week. Was actually expecting to break even or maybe lose a pound but 3lb, I'll take that.
My treats well I bought some blueberry muffins to have with my afternoon coffee (4 times) suppose my sweet tooth got better of me.
Secondly i had a lunch date on Sunday so had a big roast dinner, it was someone I met online and was a first date. However before anyone gets excited not sure it'll go any further, don't think we are really compatable and not just gonna date for the sake. Still online friends, but feel thats how it'll stay.
Mick - start weight 222lb - todays weight - 205lb - target loss 22lb - loss this week 3lb (14%) - total loss 17lb ( 78%).
Reg - start weight 131lb - todays weight - 127.5lb - target loss 6lb - loss this week 1lb (17%%) -
total loss so far - 3.5lb (58%)
Going to TT practice this afternoon, still struggling with my joints been sore but not as bad, it could do me good to really get moving but could be too much, will see. If I come through ok I've got a tournament down in leicestershire on Saturday, will decide later if I'll be going.
Most of my joint pain is gout related caused by an inbalance of uric acid in my blood, sadly the trigger in this instant is likely to be because i'm dieting and losing weight quickly, just got to grin and bear it because long term weight loss should benefit long time.
Been having a medical which included a blood test, as expected my uric levels were high "470" should be less than "400", thats not massively high so think I'm eating mostly the right stuff.
On a good note my colesterol was low 3.2 (below 5 is good) and no sign of diabetos or anything else.
Also had a ECG test and although I've got to see the Doc for my official results the nurse said it looks ok, same thing with my blood pressure had 24 hour monitor fitted and results look fine.

Weight Loss Challenge - week 6
Another week of my weight loss campaign and another 2 pound gone making a stone lost so far in 6 weeks. Although pleased of course not bragging yet because all I've really taken off is weight I'd gained on my holidays I'm actually back to my lightest weight this year. Saying that its also the lightest I've been for many years I believe.
That doesn't mean I'll now get complacent, this continues I'll make my 22lb 11 week target I'm confident, I feel very motivated.
Got to mention I've a pair of black pinstripe smart jeans (had about 2 years) that have never worn because far too tight. Tried on yesterday and nearly there, would still be a tad tight for comfort but could get away with wearing them, expect to be taking them to Austria in august they'll be fine by then.
Mick - start weight 222lb - todays weight - 208lb - target loss 22lb - loss this week 2lb (9%) - total loss 14lb ( 64%).
Reg - start weight 131lb - todays weight - 128.5lb - target loss 6lb - loss this week +0.5lb (+8%) -
total loss so far - 2.5lb (42%)
In a way the most pleasing thing about it is I've done this without a lot of exercise due to problems with my joints (knees, ankles, elbows), in the past the constant pain would have derailed me. Things are improving although still some pain and stiffness but yesterday i was able to do 3 hours work in the garden which involved bending and climbing so things are looking up.
Also off for a table tennis practice this afternoon, it'll be a bit painful I think but could do me good and if I don't get a reaction I'll play again tomorrow. Need to sharpen up because I've a competition a week on saturday, not sure yet whether I'll be fit enough, standard is high and if I've restricted movement will be waste of time so wont go.
Its to the Docs later this morning to get results of my blood test, will see what he says.

Need to sharpen up because I've a competition a week on saturday, not sure yet whether I'll be fit enough, standard is high and if I've restricted movement will be waste of time so wont go.
Its to the Docs later this morning to get results of my blood test, will see what he says.

Thats Life
At the weekend Mandy and myself split up, not really sure of the full reason think its becase our lives and what we want is so different, still its been a good 3 months and I've some nice memories, just wasn't to be.
Although I'm a touch dissapointed it hadn't worked out better as I like her I'm quite happy to move on, maybe biggest mistake would have been if we tried to make something work that wasn't right.
So not looking over my shoulder, just a case of moving forward.

Blood
Just had call from the docs they have recieved the results of my blood test so I'm going to see them next wednesday to find out what they reveal.
To be honest it'll be good to see what i need to do but at same time slightly nervous to what they may find.
Don't want to tempt fate but feel my more healthy eating is starting to show benefits and my painful joints are on the mend. Worst as been my right knee which seems better, couldn't bend it before and have much more movement now.
Strangely my left knee is very sore but think thats something i aggravated by over compensating whe gardening, way I'm feeling am optimistic everything will clear up by the end of the weekend.
Am entered in a table tennis competition in a couple of weeks, its a tough one and could do to be fit enough to practice next week, we'll see.

Weght Loss Challenge - Week 5
Only lost 1lb this week but at least I'm still moving in the right direction but hope to do a little better next week, lets see.
I'm sort of experimenting with what I eat and did give myself a couple of treats last week because I'm well on target.
5 weeks of my challenge done with 6 to go and I'm past the half way stage so reckon right where I should be which is pleasng with not been able to exercise properly, feel my determination isn't wavering at all which we all know can happen, in fact its getting stronger.
Last night a friend I haven't seen for 3 or 4 weeks commented "have you lost some weight" think it always gives you a boost when people start to notice.
Reg records same weight as last week which isn't surprising after her good show last wednesday, still on target to reach her goal weight.
Mick - start weight 222lb - todays weight - 210lb - target loss 22lb - loss this week 1lb (5%) - total loss 12lb ( 55%).
Reg - start weight 131lb - todays weight - 128lb - target loss 6lb - loss this week 0lb (+0%) -
total loss so far - 3lb (50%)
Did have some bad news yesterday one of my cousins wife passed away, wasn't unexpected she had been battling cancer awhile now, still sad news. It didn' stop there another cousin as had a stroke, dont know any details how bad need to find out more.
They say things happen in threes and another cousin as broken his hip, he actually lives abroad so rarely see him nowadays but will try find out more.
Leeds United takeover seems to happening as the club announced "due dillegence" checks are been carried out, still no clues to who the new owners are.

Frustration
Must admit I'm now getting really frustrated with the pain in my joints, there are some signs of improvement but its still making it difficult to do things i want.
Did get out and cut the lawn yesterday, wasn't great fun and took twice as long as normal but it needed doing. Got a bit of weeding to do but my knees are swollen so its difficult to bend down prob give it a go tomoz.
I'm certainly losing a lot of sleep just can't get comfy in bed most nights. In fact at times its been a effort just to move or walk about.
I'm eating the right stuff and think its starting to work some signs of improvement are there, so maybe got to stay positive but its very depressing at time, had about as much as i can take now.
Yesterday went for a blood test, will get results in a couple of days so maybe it will tell us something, bit nervous never know what they'll find.
I'm still determined to lose weight and so far so good but its not easy when you can't exercise, still lets hope tomorrows weigh in shows another positive result.
Did have a lovely sunday lunch this week, Mandy cooked for me for the first time, she made a real effort to provide everthing i liked and it was cooked to perfection. We then had a nice afternoon just cuddled up on her sofa watching tv, enjoyed it so much.
Well England went out in Euros actually drew with Italy but lost the penalty shoot out, to be fair they deserved it was the better team.
Talking sport Wimbledon as started and I'm a bit worried about the rain forecast in case Cliff gives us a song or two, lol.

Pain hurts
As regular readers of my blog will know I occasionally suffer from gout, many things can trigger an attack and i try to watch my food intake only eating foods with high purine content in moderation.
Well last weekend I had a bad attack, and am having problems with both knees, right foot/ankle and elbows, believe me its painful, finding it hard to sleep so quite grumby.
I've had it in various joints in the past but not all at same time, daily tasks are almst impossible, I've been in a mess, believe me. Think worst attack I've had, certainly for a long time since i started watching what i eat.
So whats caused it, well I believe its my weight loss combined to some foods/drink I eat. Before anyone says been a better weight should be beneficial, I know that is true but losing weight initially can effect your blood initially so is a very likely cause.
I've been to the Docs and am been sent for a blood test to see my Uric acid levels have worsened over the years (since last time they tested), will also tell me if I have other underlying problems (kidney function, heart, diabetic, etc).
I've been having a good read up and have made the decision that I've got to help myself, currently when i have a attack i have anti-inflammetery pills but depending on the test results the doc says i may be prescribed a daily pill to help keep my uric acid levels down. There is a real danger of it causing many health issues.
This doesn't come without side effects so i will avoid if possible, so for me its a lot of big lifestyle changes. Certain food will be cut from my diet, others will allow in moderation but not during any attack however mild. Of course there are some foods that are good and i'm moving to them.
Going to cut back alcohol intake and nne at all during an attack.
I'll continue to lose weight with a new enthusiasm think the long term benefit as got to be better health where my main reason in the past is to look better.
I'll add on positive note things are improving today, think my eating the right stuff is starting to come into play. I know it'll take time to find the right balane for me but i just have to get there, can't go on like this.

Weight Loss Challenge -
Happy with my result this week as I've lost 4lb which takes me to 11lb lost in 4 weeks, thats half what I'm aiming for. I knew it would be a good week, haven't touched a drop of beer and been eating well (lots of salads). Although I'm happy with the weight loss its a double wammy because I got a bad gout attack, getting down to a reasonable weight will eventually help limit attacks but it appears as I drop it can bring on a attack.
On the other hand I know what I eat can help long term so it keeps myenthusiasm to keep going. Actually been to the Docs this morning and I've to go to the hospital for a blood test then we'll discuss where we go from here.
Reg reports a good weigh in losin 2.5lb taking her to 3lb total loss which is 50% of her target, well done.
Mick - start weight 222lb - todays weight - 211lb - target loss 22lb - loss this week 4lb (18%) - total loss 11lb ( 50%).
M - start weight 163lb - todays weight -?lb - target loss 9lb - loss this week -?lb (?%) - total loss so far ?lb (?%)
Reg - start weight 131lb - todays weight - 128lb - target loss 6lb - loss this week 2.5lb (+42%) - total loss so far - 3lb (50%)
Got to mention well done England in reaching the last 8 of the Euros bring on Italy on Sunday. While on the subject of Football its looking like the investment rumours in Leeds United are correct, all of a sudden we have started buying players, decent ones at that.

Weight Loss Challenge - Week Three
Thats three weeks of this 11 week challenge gone and I'm still on target, so far I've lost 7lb so thats 2lb this week. Sort of happy but was hoping for maybe another pound but lets just say so far so good.
M beat me on weekly figure losin 1lb off her target (11%) although over the 3 weeks I'm slightly ahead with 32% against 22% of target lost.
Bad week for Reg she gained half a pound, happens to us all sometimes and reckon ith her determination she'll bounce straight back next week.
Mick - start weight 222lb - todays weight - 215lb - target loss 22lb - loss this week 2lb (9%) - total loss 7lb ( 32%).
M - start weight 163lb - todays weight -161lb - target loss 9lb - loss this week -1lb (11%) - total loss so far 2lb (22%)
Reg - start weight 131lb - todays weight - 130.5lb - target loss 6lb - loss this week +0.5lb (+8%) - total loss so far - 0.5lb (8%)
Other things happening well its all to do with sport, played my table tennis tournament at the weekend, found it physically tough some very hard matches. As I suspected I lacked sharpness through lack of serious practicectice, my footwork wasn't good enough especially against the strong attackers.
Did have one really good game against the top player in my section, he was unbeaten but I took him to deuce in the 5th and deciding set. He's a defender but very fast around the court gave it everything to match him and nearly pulled it off actually had a match point at 10-9 in the decider, had come back from 2 sets down aswell.
My next competition is in 4 weeks time in Leicestershire, hopfully get some good practice by then and be a bit sharper.
Still strong rumours on Leeds United takeover, expecting something to happen this week but will believe it when I see it. Need some money in soon because we wont have enough players to start the season otherwise.
At least got the Euros to keep me happy, good first performance by England getting a draw with France, now for victories against Ukraine and Sweden.

Come on England
As you all know I'm a big football fan so am pleased the European championships have started. Everyone knows club wise I'm a big fan of Leeds but I'm also a patriot and love to see England do well, many years ago (70's & 80's) I used to go to all the internatioal matches and to be honest miss it sometimes. It was a great period of my life following Club and country home and away.
Still I'll be right behind England when they play France on Monday watching on the TV, many are writing our chances off in fact I've never known such little expectation for a England because of our inexperienced squad but I've a sneaking people they'll surprise a few.
On another note I've just found out one of my all time music heroes Ray Davies (former Kinks front man) is playing York Barbican on 12th August. Gutted its the day I fly to Austria would have loved to have gone. Davies is recognised by many as one of the best British songwriters of all time and his music as been covered by many top acts.
Away playing TT at Nottingham tomorrow, got a tough section so should get a good work out, not expecting miracles because not trained enough but a few hard games will do me good. Glad got it on because its been a boring last couple of days, did get in the garden and cut lawn this morning bt the weather hasn't been great recently, seems to rain every day.

Weight Loss Challenge - Not Great
Well the weight loss challenge continues and I've done my weigh in, its not great but still managed to lose another pound taking my total loss over 2 weeks to 5lb so still on target but will have to do better. Still I wasn't expecting a great loss this week, had a couple of nights out and the eating hasn't always been good, not always bad either but I know I can improve.
Exercise wasn't as good as last week either mainly down to the weather and the bank hol weekend but that will change this week, got my plans.
Got Reg's first weigh in on Monday, she missed last week because was away on holiday, so far its a 1lb loss (which is good following a holiday) which I split over the 2 weeks of our challenge.
M had a iffy week and didn't lose or gain so stays same as last week so will need a good result next week.
So by my reckoning Reg is the weekly winner with 8% against my 5% but I hold overall lead with 23% lost (Reg 17% & M 11%).
Mick - start weight 222lb - todays weight - 217lb - target loss 22lb - loss this week 1lb (5%) - total loss 5lb ( 23%).
M - start weight 163lb - todays weight -162lb - target loss 9lb - loss this week -0lb (0%) - total loss so far ?? (11%)
Reg - start weight 131lb - todays weight - 130lb - target loss 6lb - loss this week 0.5lb (8%) - total loss so far - 1lb (17%)
Got a TT tournament on Sunday down at Nottingham, should be good because its a ratings tournament where you only play people of similar ranking. Not sure how sharp I am but 6 or 7 tough games win or lose will certainly help the fitness I'm sure.
Went to York with Mandy yesterday just for a light lunch and to get a wedding present for one of my cousins kids who is getting married in september.
As we walked along the river did have to go and tell one boat owner that he was flying his Union Jack upside down, if you cant do it right don't bother. He was a touch perplexed when I asked if he had pirates aboard, well thats what flying the flag upside down means.

Its Getting Better
After yesterdays post thought I'd just say I'm feeling better, lemsip before bed seemed to do the trick with my sore throat. Yes definately feeling good had a walk up to the market today as the sun was shining first thing, however it didn't last and I got caught in a rain shower.
Not seeing Mandy today as she is working but tomorrow we are planning to have a day out, all been well because she is having to work a few extra hours because smeone left.
Got confirmtion from the Table Tennis competition I've entered next Sunday, its a national ratings tournament so will be tough. Not sure how sharp I am at present not done a lot of training but I'll give it go and get a good work out.

Fed up
Well must say I'm really fed up today, weather as been rubbish just rained all day. To make matters worse I'm feelin ill myself, sore throat, headache, etc.
Was gonna meet up with Mandy this afternoon but I cried off because of how I was, wouldn't be good copany thats for sure.
She came around last and spent the night curled up on the sofa watching a film "The Long Good Friday" which is a British Gangster film, neither of us had seen it before, was ok but there better films out there. Still it just good spending time together the film is secondary.
Yeh suppose today i'm just feeling sorry for myself, reckon a lemsip before bed and hope tomorrow is better.
On another note its the Queens silver jubilee and a lot of people are been patriotic and hanging the Union Jack outside their homes. As a patriot myself I think its great but oe thing that really irritates me is the people who hang the flag upside down, its surprising how many do. To me if you don't know your not a patriot so don't try pretend you are.
Finally fingers crossed it looks like Leeds United are going to get some investment at last, could be taken over. Apparently if rumours are to believed a mystery consortium from Chicago are in advanced negotiations although others are also showing interest.
Lets see.

Weight Loss Challenge - Week One
Well week one of my weight loss challenge is over and from a personal perspective think I've made a good start, exercise as increased played TT 4 times (2 comps and training twice), done a lot of gardening and a good bit of walking through the week.
On the eating side I've been eating salads quite a bit also trying to use fruit for snacks, generally its been good but I'd be lying if I said there hasn't been to odd slack moment, so looking on the brightside I know I can still do better.
Still the result of all that is a 4lb weight loss, decent start as my 22lb target requires losing 2lb per week so could say two weeks work in one week.
Just got result from M and she reports a 1lb loss which equates to 11% loss which is within plan so well done.
Should get Regs results later (and anyone else that cares to join in) so will update then.
As you'll see I'm basing the results on percentage of target so far we've had approx 9% of the 11 weeks so any loss above that number is good.
Mick - start weight 222lb - todays weight - 218lb - target loss 22lb - loss 4lb ( 18%)
M - start weight 163lb - todays weight -162lb - target loss 9lb - loss 1lb (11%)
Reg - start weight 131lb - todays weight - ???? - target loss 6lb - loss ?? ()
On another note had a nice day yesterday with Mandy, we went to the Yorkshire Riviera, mainly Scarborough, parked up at south side and walked all the way along the front to peasholm park on the north side.
Came back over the hill and through town where we stopped for a light lunch, then back down to the harbour, walked along beach back to the car. It was really nice and we coverered a few miles.
On way home stopped off in Filey for another beach walk, that is one big beach, really enjoyed the day out.

Going well
The weather is holding out still mid 20's with the sun shining so life is good.
Been seeing a bit of my new friend Mandy, friday night she came to my places and we watched a DVD together, its just good getting quality time together as we get to know each other more.
Saturday I'd planned to go golfing with two friends (1st time for months) and when we got there we were told the course was closed because there was a team match on. Wasn't happy but accepted it because it was in the diary but then we found out that they were letting a society on awell. Come on we pay a annual membership nd they let outsiders on, lets just say we were sitting feathers.
This morning saw Mandy again, we went walking along the canal, it was really nice and i was out just under 3 hours, covered a fair distance.
Not meeting again until tuesday as she is working tonight and monday morning, I'm TT training monday afternoon and have a Pool match mon night. Not sure where we will go tuesday but as she isn't working and I'm free all day we'll go off somewhere nice, depending on the weather.
Really pleased I've met Mandy, I needed to move on and she makes me feel good about myself, things are going really good even though its still early days.
Been busy in the garden, still a couple of areas need some work (weeding) but its looking really good, got a lot of plants coming on well.
Had something in the post the other day which was supposed to answer a few questions for me on the one burning issue i've got, however it didn't tell me what I wanted so the quest goes on, left me a bit down. If you are confused don't worry its a personal issue i wont blog about, some of you know where i'm coming from.

Weight Loss Challenge - New Beginning
As those of you that have read my previous posts will know today I'm starting a weight loss campaign and did challenge anyone to join in. Intention was to compare everyone based on percentage (against target) each week to provide extra incentive.
Sadly not too many takers but still time just let me know your start weight and what you aim to lose over the next 11 weeks then update every wednesday, i'll do calculations.
I've one promised challenger "M" who is sending her weight later today (now done) and whatever it is i know the target is get down to 154lb (11stone).
Another is showing interest but we'll see if the challenge is taken up.
Post now been amended because my long time friend on here Regina as joined in, come on anyone else, bloggers or none bloggers.
Yes 11 weeks is a strange time period but it takes me up to my next holiday so seemed obvious. M reasons for this new beginning is because i blew most of my this years efforts on holiday (as posted previously) so am very determined to give it a big push.
So on to the challenge, well I weighed in at 222lb this morning and I know I previously stated a 20lb loss for my target but it seems silly to aim at 202lb so I'm going for a 22lb loss and hit the 200lb mark. 11 weeks 2lb per week sounds possible to me, just needs effort.
So start facts :-
Mick - Start Weight "222lb", Target Weight "200lb", Target Loss "22lb"
M - Start Weight "163lb", Target Weight "154lb", Target Loss "9lb"
Reg - Start Weight "131lb", Target Weight "125lb", Target Loss "6lb"
Any more challengers ?
Writing this after breakfast and have already started my efforts by only having two weetabix (with fruit) instead of my usual three. Also planned lighter than normal meals later today and playing table tennis tonight, trainingtomoz morning, then competition again tomoz night. Top that up with some gardening and only fruit as snacks (if needed) I'm on my way with a mixture of diet and exercise.

Two nice afternoons
With the weather now improving took the opportunity to spend the last two afternoons with my new lady friend.
Yesterday we went to York and walked around the city walls stopping half way for cofffee (and cake), very pleasant it was.
Today was probably the hottest day so far (even the shorts came out) so we had a stroll into town and had a ice cream before chillingin the park. Big news there while sat on the bench a photographer asked if we would pose for a shot, and we agreed. Apparently we will now be appearing in the "Yorkshire Life" magazine (july issue).
No the ice cream in th photo wasn't todays that was one i had in Croatia and its there as a reminder my new weight loss campaign starts tomoz (see last post) so wont be seeing anything like that for awhile.

Great Holiday - Weight Loss Disaster
I'm back from Croatia and must say what a lovely country it is really enjoyed my time there. My hotel was one of three in what was called the flower complex and must admit the gardens were beautiful especially the roses.
Things were cheap the country is not on the euro, have there own currency (kuna) but that goes with a downside. Things like ice cream, cakes & beer were dirt cheap so it would have been rude not to indulge on a daily basis.
So you've probably guessed i've pilled a lot of weight back on, in fact i got a major shock when i jumped on the scales immediately on my return to find i was 232lb a increase of 24lb in a fornight. Ok there is always some temporary weight gain and to be honest it followed a big meal and 24 hours later it was 8lb lower at 224lb but still way above the 208lb i was pre-holiday (16lb above).
Think by wednesdays weight in it'll be a few more pounds lighter now i'm into normal eating habits but its still gonna be a record holiday increase i think (7lb is about normal for me during a fortnights holiday).
So its time for a big push on the weight loss, from wednesday it'll 11 weeks to my Austria trip, I'll weigh every wednesday morning and am setting myself a target of losing 20lb in that period from whatever i weigh this wednesday.
However I challenge any of my friends (and blog friends) that read this and want to lose weight to also take me up on this. So name your own 11 week target loss, doesn't need to be 20lb same as me as we are all at different stages, can be whatever you want to lose in that period.
Then every week (tues or wed morning) message/comment me your weight and each week i'll produce a league table on my blog based on percentage of target loss achieved (also a weekly performance result).
Should boost those doing well but will name and shame those failing.
So any volunteers to take up my challenge (don't need to be bloggers).
Back to flowers what you think to this beauty in my garden :-
